Q: Q: Does Bison have Canada-only work or schedules runs?
A: Most of our regional freight moves by turnpike and we do offer several different Canada-only and scheduled run options. These runs
are considered preferred runs, so current Bison Drivers would be given first consideration to fill these openings. Current opportunities vary from region
to region so it is best to contact the Recruiter for your area for up-to-date information.
Q: Q: Does Bison train or hire brand new drivers?
A: Currently, our hiring criteria require a minimum of 2 years Canada/US long haul experience. Applicants with a minimum of 12 months
experience may be considered.
Q: Q: How long does it take to get hired?
A: Once we receive an application completed in full, driver's abstract, CVOR (ON residents), a copy of your driver’s licence, FAST card,
passport and/or proof of citizenship – we will contact you by phone to assess your qualification. If we decide to move forward with your application and
we have received all necessary documents, we will begin checking references. After we have checked all of your references for the past 3 years and conducted
a phone interview with you, we are able to make a decision on your application. While the exact time frame varies due to the response rate of your previous
employers in returning our reference request as well as you as an applicant to provide us with all necessary information. If your application is approved,
you must successfully complete a road test, a drug test, a transportation of dangerous goods test, a personal interview and our three day orientation. Bison
Transport makes all of these arrangements for you at our cost. Owner Operators are also subject to tractor approval.
Q: Q: Can I take my days off on the weekend?
A: As a Bison driver, you will have opportunities to move into special runs that may allow weekends off. However, in our long haul division,
it is impossible to guarantee your time off on weekends only. Bison is committed to providing you with a good mix of weekends and weekdays off throughout the
year. We also do an excellent job of ensuring you are home for special days you have requested in advance.
Q: Q: What kind of equipment does Bison have?
A: Our modern fleet consists primarily of Volvos and Freightliners. All of our long haul tractors are equipped with either an Eaton auto-shift,
Meritor full auto shift or Volvo I-Shift “smart” fully automated transmission. Our turnpike daycab fleet is equipeed with either 13 or 18 speed unsynchronized
manual transmissions.
Q: Q: Will I have an assigned unit?
A: It will depend on the mileage option you choose. Full time drivers meeting mileage requirements have assigned units. Your assigned unit must
remain in the home terminal’s yard on days off as it may be used by other drivers while you are on days off or on holidays. Your assigned unit will be available
and ready when you are heading back out for dispatch.
Q: Q: Does Bison have Forced Dispatch?
A: No. All trips are planned to provide you with enough time to legally complete the trip. We travel from coast to coast in Canada and the
lower 48 states.
Q: Q: I do not have a passport or a FAST card. Will that be a problem?
A: As a long haul driver, you are required to have a valid border crossing document. We prefer our drivers to have both – passport and FAST
card – but either one will suffice when you apply. We do not accept applicants that do not have one of these documents.
Q: Q: You are asking for full 10 years work history - why?
A: 10 years of work history is a DOT requirement.
