Investing In The Future of Safety

The number one goal when building a culture of safety is keeping our Professional Drivers and the public around them safe. Continuous investment into new technologies is a key part of that. This week, actually today, we are installing new cameras on a handful of owner-operator tractors as part of a trial program with Netradyne, a safety-first, AI-driven camera platform.

As part of this owner-operator trial program, Bison is testing several camera types in different orientations to determine which might best benefit our safety program. Tractors that are getting both in-cab and exterior cameras installed will have a camera on each side, looking down the length of the truck and trailer. These exterior cameras will be able to see the tractor and surrounding traffic in their field of view. The interior cameras for this configuration will be housed in a single unit with one lens facing out towards the road, like a traditional dashcam, and one lens facing the interior of the cab.

For the in-cab-only configuration, the unit will have a total of four cameras. Like the interior+exterior configuration, the interior unit will have a lens facing forward toward the road and a lens facing inward. The other two lenses in this configuration will be pointed out the side windows, focused explicitly on the side view mirrors, so the surrounding environment is still captured.

In addition to the environmental awareness these cameras add to standard dashcam setups, these cameras will also be AI-powered. This AI system will enable the cameras to analyze real-time video and warn drivers of potential safety concerns. For example, if a Driver is approaching an intersection and has a green light, but the camera spots a car approaching from the right that isn’t slowing down, it can analyze what it sees and warn the driver ahead of time so they can take the necessary precautions to avoid a collision. This AI system works similarly for all kinds of scenarios and even awards/deducts points from the driver based on how safely the driver operates.

Implementing systems like this into our fleet not only protects our Drivers and the people they share the roads with, but it also helps set the record straight when Drivers are involved in incidents that simply aren’t their fault.
